What's it all about?

The Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) is a grant that helps to pay for additional equipment and support that you may need as a direct result of your physical disability, mental health condition, autism spectrum disorder or specific learning difficulty.

Get the support you need...

DSA may help with the cost of having a personal helper, specialist equipment, the additional cost of travel and other items for your course, such as printing and photocopying costs.

One-to-One Support

A personal helper may be needed for certain disabilities e.g. note takers, sighted helpers, one-to-one study skills support, specialist mentoring support or campus buddy.

Travel Costs

During your studies, additional travel costs may be incurred. DSA may pay for the additional portion of your travel costs.

The allowance may be used to purchase specialist equipment and software such as a screen reader, dictaphone, computer, furniture or other specialist software applications.

General Expenses

General expenses may cover extra printing or photocopying costs, purchasing additional course-related books or paying for binding that is associated with your particular course and disability.

How do I apply for DSA?

Fill in the slimline DSA application form found on the Student Finance NI website.

Fill in the longer DSA
application form found on the Student Finance NI website.

Send to your local Education Authority (EA) with supporting evidence of your condition.

Your local EA sends you an eligibility letter.

Are you eligible to receive DSA?

You require a DSA Needs Assessment. This is an informal meeting to identify the
appropriate support for you while studying. Contact us to arrange.

Check you have sent required evidence of your condition. Please Contact us for advice.

Needs Assessment completed?

Your Needs Assessment report will be submitted to your local EA and you will receive an Awards Letter detailing support that will be provided via DSA.
